March 19 1935 Applied for entry to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy as a Stoker at 6 Regimental District Palmerston North.

May 18 1935 at HMS Philomel Naval Depot Devonport volunteered for 12 years service commencing 15 May 1935 age 22 years 3 months.
