Born 26 February 1914 Wellington New Zealand. His parents were Edward John Paton and Isabella Catherine (Kit) nee Munro. Siblings were Mary (the eldest) and Bruce (the youngest), my father.

The family lived at Mangaweka Rangitikei District North Island New Zealand on their sheep farm where TB worked as a farm hand. So the story goes, Thomas (Tommy) enjoyed life and owned a motor-bike which he almost drove off the 'old cliff road' into the river. Fortunately he landed on a flax bush and the next morning was rescued by a neighbour!

During the war years 1941 and 1942 his parents lived at 8 Minnehaha Avenue Takapuna Auckland and 7 William Street Takapuna Auckland.
